RV-FS#04, Series of 1999

Did you know that . . .

the average Bicolano generates 0.2 kilogram of solid waste daily?

Based on a study conducted for the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Region V by the Save Our Future Foundation, Inc., the average person in Bicol generates around 0.2 kilogram of solid waste daily. This translates to a total of 327,219.7 metric tons of garbage in 1998. Camarines Sur, being the largest among the provinces in terms of land area and population, accounted for more than half of the region's total solid waste generation.

By the year 2000, the generation of garbage by residents in the region is expected to increase by almost four (4) percent more than in 1998. Sorsogon, Camarines Norte and Albay will be contributing 15.5 percent, 11.9 percent and 9.2 percent of total waste, respectively.

By year 2020, the Bicol Region will have accumulated 443,807.1 metric tons of solid waste, a 35.6 percent increase over the 1998 level. On a daily basis, this means that an average of 1,215,910 kilograms of solid waste will be thrown.

In 1995 when the study was conducted, only 41 out of the region's 115 cities/ municipalities had waste disposal areas/sanitary landfills. Burning, open pit disposal and throwing of garbage in vacant spaces remain as the traditional methods of waste disposal being used. Due to these unsatisfactory methods of garbage disposal, solid wastes invariably find their way into waterways and other open areas causing pollution and other environmental hazards. This situation thus calls for a more efficient solid waste management with the active participation of the region's citizenry.

Notes: Some details may not add up to totals due to rounding. The solid waste generation rate in 1995 was computed based on actual population data. For 1998 onwards, the computations were based on the 1995 Census-based Population Projections.
