Did you know that . . .

in 1999, municipal fishing accounted for 64 percent of
total production in the Bicol Region?

In 1999, municipal fishing accounted for 64 percent of the total fish production in the Bicol region. Among provinces, Masbate posted the highest contribution to the region's total fish production at 28.6 percent.

Fish Production by Type of Production, Region V: 1998-1999Majority of the Bicolano fishermen belong to the lower income families, and are mostly municipal fishermen. Unlike commercial fishing and aquaculture, less capital is needed in municipal fishing; however, it is labor intensive.

A slight decrease in the region's total fish production, of 0.9 percent, was noted in 1999. Among the types of fish production, only aquaculture production posted an increase, at 11.1 percent. Both commercial and municipal fishing productions were down by 6.4 percent and 1.9 percent, respectively

Fish production in Masbate and Sorsogon decreased by 21.4 percent and 9.0 percent, respectively, mainly due to the negative growth in commercial and municipal fishing in these provinces. These provinces were the two biggest fish producers in the region in 1998.

The other four provinces namely, Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, and Catanduanes, showed increase in production. Camarines Norte posted the highest increase at 34.4 percent, while Albay had the lowest at 5.9 percent. Aquaculture production in Camarines Norte also recorded the highest increase at 42.1 percent among provinces. Total aquaculture production in the region was bouyed up by the increase in seaweeds production, a priority program of the fishery sector and several cooperatives.

Fish production is classified into three types: commercial, municipal and aquaculture. Commercial fishing is fishing for commercial purposes in waters more than seven fathoms deep with the use of fishing boats of more than three gross tons. Municipal fishing utilizes fishing boats of three gross tons or less, or using gear not requiring the use of boats.Municipal fishermen exploits a zone that stretches from the shoreline outwards to approximately 25 kilomenters. Aquaculture, on the other hand, refers to the rearing or raising, under controlled conditions, of aquatic products such as fish, oysters, seaweeds and other aquatic resources in sea, lakes, rivers and swamps and other bodies of water.
