P72.7 Million worth of property in Region V was lost to fires in 1998?

A total of 189 fires occurred in the Bicol region in 1998, higher than the recorded incidents in 1997 by 13.2 percent or 22 cases. Last year's fires claimed 7 lives, injured 13 persons and damaged P72.7 million worth of property.

The most number of fires occurred during the second quarter of 1998. Almost 32 percent of the total number of fires in 1998 or 60 cases were recorded during this period -- higher than the first quarter incidents by 11 cases and the third and fourth quarters by 20 cases.

Camarines Sur had the highest incidence accounting for 41.3 percent of the fires that razed the region in 1998. Albay followed with 24.9 percent.
  

In terms of fatalities, Albay had the most number of deaths of 3 persons. On the other hand, Camarines Norte and Camarines Sur each had four injured persons as a result of the fires in these provinces.

Despite the increase in fire incidence, a 3.3 percent decrease in property damages was noted. Camarines Sur suffered the greatest damage to property representing 25.8 percent of the total property damages in the region. Masbate, which had only 21 fire incidents, ranked second. Albay, with the second highest number of fires in 1998 ranked fourth in terms of property damages. While Sorsogon had the lowest number of incidents of 11, it lost almost P15.5 million worth of properties, the third highest in the region.
