The hands that rock the cradle also feed the region. In the Bicol Region, there were more females (59.2 percent) than males (40.8 percent) among household members of agricultural operators involved in agricultural activities. This trend was prevalent in five provinces except in Sorsogon where there were more males (50.5 percent) than females (49.5 percent) engaged in agricultural activities among the household members of agricultural operators. Involvement of women household members in agricultural activities of agricultural operators was greatest in Masbate at 64.5 percent, higher by 29 percentage points than that of men’s involvement. Most (87.3 percent) of the agricultural operators in the Bicol Region, however, are males.

The findings were based on the results of the 2002 Census of Agriculture conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO). An agricultural operator is a person who takes the technological and administrative responsibility of managing a holding. A holding is any piece of land or pieces of land used for agricultural activity. The agricultural operator is responsible for making day-to-day decisions in operating the holding including the management and supervision of hired labor.

Among provinces, Masbate has the greatest number of male agricultural operators at 89.0 percent while Albay has the least at 84.6 percent. Expectedly Camarines Sur, being the largest in terms of land area and population has the greatest number of agricultural operators comprising 34.9 percent of the agricultural operators in the region.

In terms of total area of farms, Camarines Sur comprised 29.5 percent of the total area of farms in the region. Catanduanes has the least number of agricultural operators and smallest total area of farms. However, while Albay ranks second in terms of the number of agricultural operators, it only ranks third in terms of total area of farms. On the other hand, Masbate ranks third in terms of the number of agricultural operators but ranks second in terms of total area of farms.
