lung and heart diseases are the two leading causes of mortality in the Bicol Region?

Ten Leading Causes of MortalityDuring the period 1994-1998, respiratory diseases and hypertensive vascular diseases were the two leading causes of mortality in the Bicol Region. In 1995 however, there were more deaths due to diseases of the heart than due to hypertensive vascular diseases.

Respiratory diseases are diseases whether congenital or acquired, that involves the upper and lower respiratory tract and lungs. Hypertensive vascular diseases are diseases of the vascular system classified as blood pressure of over 140/90. On the other hand, diseases of the heart are those whether congenital or acquired that involves the heart muscles, blood vessels, valves and septum.
  

In 1998, respiratory diseases ranked first among the leading causes of mortality in the region affecting 87 persons per 100,000 population. It also ranked first in 1995 and 1997. Hypertensive vascular diseases were the second leading causes of mortality especially during 1997 and 1998. In 1994 and 1995 however, it ranked first and affected around 90 persons per 100,000 population in 1994.
