In 1998, respiratory diseases ranked first among the leading causes of mortality in the region affecting 87 persons per 100,000 population. It also ranked first in 1995 and 1997. Hypertensive vascular diseases were the second leading causes of mortality especially during 1997 and 1998. In 1994 and 1995 however, it ranked first and affected around 90 persons per 100,000 population in 1994. Leading Causes of Mortality, Number and Rate
