Profile - Virac, Catanduanes Virac is politically subdivided into 63 barangays, 24 urban and 39 rural. Based on the 2007 Census of Population conducted by the National Statistics Office, Cavinitan, San Isidro Village and Calatagan are the most populated barangays of Virac. On the other hand, San Jose registered the least population with 141. Urban barangays have a combined population of 35,511 while rural barangays have 29,043. Population density of Virac was placed at 410.10 persons per square kilometer in 2007. Bicol is the dominant language/dialect, spoken by about 97.4 percent of residents of Virac. Other dominant dialects spoken are Tagalog (1.05 percent), Waray (0.13 percent), Cebuano (0.13 percent), Maguindanao, Bantoanon, and Ilonggo. Catholicism is a deeply rooted institution in this town with 98 percent of the people embracing the faith. A cathedral had been superimposed over the old parish church. Virac is the seat of the independent diocese of Catanduanes. The town was once a vicarship of Caceres and later, the diocese of Legazpi.
