Municipal Profile - Sto.
Domingo, Albay
Economy
There was a time when Sto. Domingo was the center of Bicol’s
abaca cottage industries. But when the abaca plantations were infected with
mosaic and bunchy top disease the once lucrative cottage industry
died a
natural death.
However, business is picking up lately with the opening up of several
business establishment among which are: Brillo handicrafts located in Lidong
and manufactures quality bags and similar products for export; Sto. Domingo
Bay Export located in Calayucay and specializes in woodcarving and other
wood products; Sto. Domingo Craft manufactures paper craft and novelty items
from recycled and indigenous materials; RAC Food Product also in Lidong,
manufactures wrap-eats, junk foods and other products and Globe Coco Mfg.
Inc. More establishments are coming with the passage of the Municipal Investment and
Incentive Code.
Sto. Domingo has a rich fishing
ground with a variety of marine and fish species like malasugi or blue
marlin, the bancoles or tuna, the tanguigi and other tropical fishes like
the lapu-lapu, talakitok, baulo and of course the “kuwao” which thrives
abundantly especially during the onset of the summer season.
A group of
enterprising plant-lovers have also organized themselves into a cooperative
and is now engaged in commercial production of cut flowers like orchids,
anthuriums and many others.
Sto. Domingo is not
only basking in its rich cultural and historical past. As the country moves
forward, Sto. Domingo is also moving progressively on a steady growth.
