Oriental Mindoro
Provincial Statistics

The borders of the province of Oriental Mindoro are Verde Island passage on the north, Tablas Strait on the east and Semirara Island on the south. Oriental Mindoro has a total land area of 4,364.7 sq. km.,  divided into 14 municipalities, 1 city (Calapan) and 426 barangays.

When Mindoro was separated from Batangas its capital was Puerto Galera but when it was declared a province in 1892 and the island was divided into Occidental and Oriental Mindoro in 1950, its provincial capital was changed to Calapan.

The original settlers of the province of Oriental Mindoro belong to a minority group called the “Mangyans”.  They now reside at a reservation set aside for them by the government.

Oriental Mindoro’s major products are palay, coconut, fruits, coffee and abaca.  The region's hog and livestock industries are one of the major source of meat in Metro Manila.  Other sources of income for the region include the mining of high-grade marble and cottage industries.
