The borders of the
province of Oriental Mindoro are Verde Island passage on the
north, Tablas Strait on the east and Semirara Island on the
south. Oriental Mindoro has a total land area of 4,364.7 sq.
km., divided into 14 municipalities, 1 city (Calapan) and
426 barangays.
When Mindoro was separated
from Batangas its capital was Puerto Galera but when it was
declared a province in 1892 and the island was divided into
Occidental and Oriental Mindoro in 1950, its provincial capital
was changed to Calapan.
The original settlers of
the province of Oriental Mindoro belong to a minority group
called the “Mangyans”.
They now reside at a reservation set aside for them by
the government.
Oriental Mindoro’s major products are palay,
coconut, fruits, coffee and abaca.
The
region's hog and livestock industries are one of the
major source of meat in Metro Manila.
Other
sources of income for the region include the mining of
high-grade marble and cottage industries.
