Quezon
Provincial Statistics

The province of Quezon is situated at the eastern coast of Luzon facing the Pacific Ocean.  It has a total land area of 8,706.6 sq. km., which is composed of 40 municipalities, 1 city (Lucena City as its capital) and 1,242 barangays.  The neighboring islands of Panukulan and Polilio, Burdeos, Patnanungan and Jomalig off its coast form part of the province.  The Sierra Madre range runs the entire length of the province, with Mt. Banahaw as its highest point.

Quezon belongs to the Tagalog-speaking region.  During the Filipino-American war, the province was used as a base by General Miguel Malvar, the last Filipino general to surrender to the Americans.  “Kalilaya” was the province's first name given by the Spaniards in 1571.  Later it was changed to “Tayabas”.  However, in 1946, Manuel A. Roxas, the first President of the Republic of the Philippines renamed it Quezon, in honor of the President of the Philippine Commonwealth.

Quezon province produces palay, coconut, corn, banana, vegetables and root crops.  Its vast off shore waters and inland fishponds provide a rich source of fish and marine products.  The province is also thickly forested and its mountainous areas provide the materials for logging industry.  Its industry includes forest products and manufacturing lime and desiccated coconut.
