The province of
Quezon is situated at the eastern coast of Luzon facing the
Pacific Ocean. It
has a total land area of 8,706.6 sq. km., which is composed of
40 municipalities, 1 city (Lucena City as its capital) and 1,242
barangays. The
neighboring islands of Panukulan and Polilio, Burdeos, Patnanungan and Jomalig
off its coast form part of the province.
The Sierra Madre range runs the entire length of the
province, with Mt. Banahaw as its highest point.
Quezon belongs
to the Tagalog-speaking region.
During the Filipino-American war, the province was used
as a base by General Miguel Malvar, the last Filipino general to
surrender to the Americans.
“Kalilaya” was the province's first name given by the
Spaniards in 1571. Later
it was changed to “Tayabas”.
However, in 1946, Manuel A. Roxas, the first President of
the Republic of the Philippines renamed it Quezon, in honor of
the President of the Philippine Commonwealth.
Quezon province
produces palay, coconut, corn, banana, vegetables and root
crops. Its vast off
shore waters and inland fishponds provide a rich source of fish
and marine products. The
province is also thickly forested and its mountainous areas
provide the materials for logging industry.
Its industry includes forest products and manufacturing
lime and desiccated coconut.
