7th Mindanao Statistics Congress set on August 18-19, 2011 in Davao City

As an offshoot to the 6th Mindanao Statistics Congress (MSC), which was held in May 13-16 2009 in Villa Paraiso Resort, Mambajao, Camiguin, the 7th Mindanao Statistics Congress will be conducted for the first time in Davao Region. It will be held on August 18-19, 2011 at the UM Auditorium, UM-Matina Campus, Davao City. This event will gather Mindanao’s finest statisticians, economists and other related professionals who are involved in statistics to share updates and new ideas that will promote the efficient use of statistics as a development tool. The congress is being organized by the Philippine Statistical Association – Davao Region Chapter and spearheaded by the National Statistical Coordination Board XI (NSCB XI) in coordination with the University of Mindanao (UM) and RDCXI – Regional Statistical Coordination Committee XI.

About the Congress

The 7th MCS will carry the theme, “Statistics: Tool for Sustainable Development in Mindanao”. The objectives of the congress are three-fold, namely:

• Provide a venue for government practitioners, the business/private sector, the academe and the local government units to discuss statistical issues and information which are relevant to the development of the regions in Mindanao;

• Elicit the cooperation and support of statisticians and professionals in related fields from the government, academe and private sector towards a more responsive statistical system; and

• Come up with recommendations to improve the statistical information system and sharing or adoption of statistical tools, methods, concepts, frameworks for sustainable development in Mindanao.

B. Requirements for Proposed Papers

Paper writers interested to present scientific papers on any of the various topics covered by the 7th Mindanao Statistics Congress are enjoined to submit the abstract, together with an accomplished form (Form 1), for the submission of paper.

  1. Acceptance of Submitted Paper

 

From the submitted paper abstracts, original unpublished and novel, papers will be chosen for presentation during the congress by the Paper Review Group. In the review of the papers to be presented, the Paper Review Group shall further consider the following criteria: (1) relevance of the paper to the overall objectives of the congress; (2) timeliness of the topic of the paper vis-à-vis current and emerging concerns of the Philippine/local statistical system; and (3) impact on the demands and requirements of data users/stakeholders. Papers that have been presented in other fora, local or international, may be accepted if revisions can be made in the paper to include updates.

 

Authors of accepted papers will be notified on or before May 30, 2011. Final manuscripts should not exceed twelve (12) pages with line spacing of one and a half and using Arial font size 12 pt. All materials must be written and presented in English, the official language of the congress. The final manuscripts must be submitted not later than June 30, 2011 to the National Statistical Coordination Board XI (refer to B.1).

 

All papers accepted and received on or before June 30, 2011 will be included in the 7th MSC publications.

 

  1. Contributed Paper Sessions

 

About 25 invited papers will be presented during the scientific meetings that will be conducted simultaneously in various meeting rooms, with each session discussing two (2) to three (3) papers. The presentation of each invited paper by the author will be allotted fifteen (15) minutes. Under the guidance of a moderator, a fifteen (15) minute open forum will ensue.

 

The participants can choose the session which they wish to attend.

  1. Steering Committees and Working Committees for the 7th MSC

An inter-agency Steering Committee has been created to provide overall direction and guidance in the preparations for the 7th MSC. Various Working Committees have also been created to perform specific tasks, as follows: (a) Working Committee on Scientific Program to determine the sessions to be organized, prepare scientific program, and design a systematic procedure of conducting the sessions; (b) Working Committee on Finance and Arrangements to raise funds for the event, handle arrangements for the venue, food and registration of participants, and provide general services for the congress; (c) Working Committee on Promotions to recommend publicity activities for the MSC; and (d) Working Committee on Social and Fellowship.

A group of session organizers from the government, private sector and the academe has been formed to identify prospective paper writers, review the abstracts, identify discussants and moderators for the sessions.
