Press Release: In response to the demand for relevant and more disaggregated gender statistics at the local level, the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB), through the Regional Division XII, has come up with the Fourth Edition of the Women and Men in SOCCSKSARGEN Region (Region XII). The Philippine Government became a signatory to the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) in 1980 and ratified the said Convention the following year. The Philippines is also one of the member-countries of the United Nations that adopted the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Declaration in September 2000. One of the eight (8) main development goals under the MDG Declaration seeks to promote gender equality and empowerment of women. The aforementioned developments have made the generation of timely gender statistics imperative. The 2011 Women and Men in Region XII Statistical Handbook presents the latest available gender statistics on the different priority sectors of gender concerns in the region. Data for provinces and key cities are also provided whenever possible. This publication is an affirmation of our commitment towards the realization of the visions of the Philippine Plan for Gender-Responsive Development and in fulfilling the various international commitments of our country to gender concerns. It is hoped this publication will be a significant source of information for decision-makers, project planners, implementers and evaluators to guide them in their advocacy and in the formulation of effective plans, programs and policies for the advancement of women in the region.
