MDG Painting Contest in Digos
City

Posted 14 November 2007
To celebrate the 18th
National Statistics Month the City of Digos through the Office of the City
Planning and Development Coordinator (OCPDC, Digos City) held an MDG
Painting Contest for High School students on October 23, 2007 in Digos City.
Four public secondary schools and one private secondary school sent
participants to the contest. Thirty students tested their talents in
painting in this contest and 3 emerged as winners and a consolation prize
recipient.
The participants came from
Digos City National High School, Digos City National High School – Igpit
Extension, Kapatagan National High School, Ruparan National High School,
Holy Cross Academy of Digos.
The mechanics of the
contest were as follow: the participants had to depict in painting the 8
Millennium Development Goals, to wit: Goal 1: Eradicating extreme poverty
and hunger; Goal 2: Achieving universal primary education; Goal 3: Promoting
Gender Equality and Empowering Women; Goal 4: Reducing child mortality; Goal
5: Improving maternal health; Goal 6: Combatting HIV/AIDS, malaria and other
diseases; Goal 7: Ensuring environmental sustainability; Goal 8: Developing
a global partnership for development. Then, the participants were asked to
internalize the MDGs and draw in pencil and paper what their vision would be
of Digos City as well as the Philippines in 2015 in as far as the 8 MDGs are
concerned. Ms. Estrella R. Turingan, NSCB11 Regional Head, in her opening
remarks said that since the participants’ ages ranged from 13 to 15 years,
then, by 2015 then, they will be 21 to 23 years old on the threshold of
putting up their own families. They would then be able to have their own
visions as to how Digos City and the Philippines would be in 2015 in terms
of the MDGs.
From the pencil sketches,
these were transformed to paintings on illustration boards provided by the
OCPDC, Digos City. All the materials were supplied for free by the OCPDC,
Digos City.
The Board of Judges were
from the Office of City Mayor, Office of the City Engineer, City Health
Office, and Office of the City Planning and Development Coordinator.
The declared top three
winners: Jan Elmore Ando, first prize, Rigor Amaquin, second prize and Frela
Ann del Rosario, third prize were all from Digos City National High School.

School-Extension. The winners received cash prizes of P3,000, P2,000 and
