NSCB XI Releases
Poverty Maps of Davao del Sur

(PR-200612-R11-10,
Posted 27 December 2006)
Poverty alleviation has been a major concern of the
Philippine government. The government and other interested parties working
to fight poverty need tools to help identify areas where anti-poverty
programs will make the greatest impact.
In line with this, the
National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) embarked into poverty mapping
activities, prioritizing the 44 poorest provinces in the country. Poverty
mapping as a spatial representation and analysis of indicators of human
well-being and poverty is a useful tool in identifying the poor. They do
not only provide the means by which social and economic indicators can be
integrated but also the vehicle whereby biophysical information can be
presented.
The NSCB XI, in
collaboration with the Provincial Planning and Development Office of Davao
del Sur produced the poverty maps for the province of Davao del Sur. The
result will be presented in a Users’ Forum that will be scheduled early next
year. About 40 participants from the 11 municipalities/cities of Davao del
Sur, from the Provincial Government and from selected provincial and
regional line agencies will attend the forum. The participants are expected
to validate the maps and suggest ways to improve them.
The poverty maps show the following indicators:
underweight and overweight children 0-5 years old, new born with birthweight
less than 2.5 kgs., children 0-5 years old whose weight are below normal,
infant mortality rate, child mortality rate, percent of health workers,
number of households with access to safe water, number of crimes against
person, number of crimes against property, elementary non-participation
rate, elementary cohort non- survival rate, and domestic violence reported
to police and DSWD.
The Davao del Sur
poverty maps is the fifth set of poverty maps produced by NSCB XI. The other
poverty maps was made for the provinces of Davao Oriental, Compostela
Valley, Davao del Norte, and the city of Panabo.
