The Ilocos-Pangasinan Region, with an overall average of 63.9 percent in all subject areas, ranked third nationwide in the National Achivement Test (NAT) for Grade VI for SY 2004-2005.  Tests results showed that the Grade VI pupils in the region had near mastery levels in Mathematics at 65.8 percent, English at 64.6 percent, Filipino at 65.6 percent and Hekasi at 64.5 percent.   Meanwhile, the mean test results for Science, at 58.9 percent, posted the lowest in the region’s achievement rates though it is still near mastery level.

The Division of Laoag City surpassed all the Department of Education (DepEd) divisions in the region in the 2004-2005 NAT as it posted a mean achievement rate of 70.1 percent that is near mastery level.  Results showed that said division topped in Mathematics (72.8 percent) along with the Division of Ilocos Norte, English (71.8 percent), Hekasi (70.1 percent) and Science (67.7 percent).  In Filipino, it ranked fourth in the region’s NAT with a mean percentage score of 68.1 percent. The mean achievement rates for the five subjects  were all near mastery level.

On the other hand, the Division of Alaminos City had the lowest average achievement rate in the region among its Grade VI students at 46.1 percent, indicating low mastery level.    The Division scored low mastery levels for four out of the five subjects- 47.1 percent in Mathematics, 46.6 percent in English, 44.8 percent in Hekasi and 41.1 percent in Science.  For the subject Filipino, the Division acquired a mean percentage score of 50.7 percent which is near mastery level.

The NATs were administered by the National Education Testing and Research Center (NETRC) to Grade VI students in government schools in March 2005. The tests were designed to determine what graduating students know and can do in five subject areas at the end of the school year, namely: Mathematics, Science, English, Filipino and Hekasi/Araling Panlipunan (AP). A score of 75 percent and over means that the student has mastery of the subject; 50 percent to less than 75 percent, near mastery; and below 50 percent means low mastery
