Region 1 NSM Celebration Ends with a Statistical Symposium

The celebration of the 18th National Statistics Month (NSM) in Region 1 formally closed on October 26, 2007 with  the Joint Regional and La Union NSM Closing Ceremony at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Seminar Room in San Fernando City, La Union.  The highlight of the program was  the  Statistical Symposium,  with Dr. Romulo A. Virola, Secretary General of the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB), as guest of honor and speaker.  Dr. Virola emphasized the powerful role of statistics in shaping the progress of the Philippine society.  He added that for statistics to be able to contribute its share in nation building, we need to invest in statistics.

The other features of the symposium were the presentations of  Ms. Pura Obille and Ms. Herminia Tanguilig of the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU)  on the results of their research studies entitled “Economics of the Sericulture Industry” and  “A Methodology in Predicting the Influence of Climatic Variables on Crop Yield,” respectively.   The first study was reviewed and granted clearance by the Regional Statistical Coordination Committee (RSCC) I under the Statistical  Survey Review and Clearance System.  The paper of Ms. Tanguilig was one of the  three Region 1 papers presented during the 10th National Convention on Statistics.

 

The Closing Ceremony was attended by about 120 officials and personnel from regional and provincial line agencies, local government units, academe and  media.  It was hosted by the BSP La Union Branch and jointly sponsored by the BSP, La Union Provincial Government and Regional Statistical Coordination Committee (RSCC).
