Data
from the Department of Education (DepEd) and Commission on Higher Education
(CHED) Regional Offices 1 show that the total number of enrollees in private
and public schools increased by only 0.8 percent in School Year (SY) 2007-2008
as compared to SY 2006-2007. Only 9,029 pupils/students were added to the
1,150,048 enrollees in the previous school year in elementary, secondary and
tertiary schools regionwide. While enrolment in government schools increased by
1.4 percent, enrollment in private schools dipped by 2.0 percent as enrollment
in the tertiary level declined.
The
number of tertiary level enrollees in private schools decreased by 6.4 percent
in SY 2007-2008 as compared to the previous SY which could be due to the
increasing cost of higher education. Other students might have decided to
transfer to government schools as the number of enrollees in state universities
and colleges rose by 19.5 percent during the same period. Nonetheless, majority (65.6 percent) of the
tertiary level enrollees were in private schools in SY 2007-2008.
On
the other hand, enrollment in the elementary level was up by only 0.3 percent
in SY 2007-2008 as the number of enrollees in government schools, which
accommodated about 93.0 percent of the pupils, increased by only 0.1
percent. Meanwhile, enrollment in the
secondary level climbed by 1.6 percent as the number of enrollees in private
and government schools rose by 1.0 percent and 1.7 percent, respectively. The bulk of the secondary level students
were also found in government schools at 81.3 percent.
