Ilocos Region Prepares for 19th National Statistics Month

Preparations are now underway in the various offices in the Ilocos Region for the celebration of the 19th National Statistics Month (NSM) this October.  This is in response to National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) Memorandum Circular No. 001-08 dated June 23, 2008 enjoining the departments, bureaus, offices, and instrumentalities of the national government, government-owned and -controlled corporations, state universities and colleges, local government units, and the private sector at the national and subnational levels to actively participate in and support the celebration of the 19th NSM in October 2008. The overall theme of this year’s celebration is “Demand-Driven Statistics: Key to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Development.”

The Regional Statistical Coordination Committee (RSCC) Region 1, the designated over-all coordinator of the NSM celebration at the subnational level, has requested the various offices in the region to prepare their NSM calendars of activities. The consolidated Region 1 NSM calendar will be submitted to the NSM Steering Committee at the national level for integration in the national NSM calendar of activities. The NSCB Regional Division 1 has been designated to provide technical and administrative support to the RSCC for the NSM celebration. The common regional activities of the region will be decided upon during the RSCC 2nd regular meeting tentatively scheduled on September 9, 2008.

The celebration in the region will be an exciting event as RSCC I will again be selecting the Best NSM Activity from among the activities of the line agencies, academic institutions, non-government organizations and the private sector while the Best NSM Province will be selected from among the provinces of the region.  The region will likewise vie for the Best NSM Region, having won the award in three years already - in 2003, 2004 and 2006. This was made possible through the support and cooperation of the various offices, academic institutions and local government units who implemented different activities from the regional down to the municipal level.

The annual celebration of the NSM is pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 647, “Declaring the Month of October of Every Year as the NSM,” issued on September 20, 1990.  The observance of this event has two-fold objectives, viz: (a) to promote, enhance, and instill nationwide awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics to the different sectors of society, and (b) to elicit the cooperation and support of the general public in upgrading the quality and standards of statistics in the country.
