VISITOR ARRIVALS IN REGION I DROPS BY 4.8 % IN 2005
Visitor
arrivals in Region I declined by 4.8 percent in 2005 compared to the
301,003 tourist arrivals in 2004. The
decrease was attributed to the 1.2 percent drop in the number of
domestic/balikbayan travelers, which accounted 84.5 percent of the total number
of tourist arrivals in the region.
Likewise, foreign visitors in the region decreased by 20.8 percent in
the same year.
Most of the
foreign tourists who visited the region in 2005 were Taiwanese. Owing to their proximity to the region,
Taiwanese travelers accounted 41.2 percent of the total foreign visitors. Chinese tourists followed with a 14.6 percent share.
Majority
(55.4 %) of the region’s tourists, both
foreign and local, went to Ilocos Norte in 2005. This could be attributed to the existence of the Laoag
International Airport and the presence of historical spots in the province.
