Surfing Capital of the Northern Philippines

The Municipality of San Juan in La Union used to be famous for its pottery industry. But its inviting blue sea, rolling waves and vibrant sea life redefined this tiny town located in the province's 1st district to become known as the surfing Capital of the Northern Philippines.

A favorite venue for international and local surfing competitions, the surfing season in San Juan has two parts. From November to February, the waves are bigger and far more consistent than in any other months.  Waves are also good during the months of July to October but these are inconsistent.

San Juan is a 3rd class municipality and has a total land area of 5,186 hectares.

It is located at the western portion of the Province of La Union. It is about eight
kilometers north of San Fernando City, the province's capital.

The founding of San Juan as a municipality is recorded by three friar chroniclers on three different dates, 1806, 1803 and 1585. Earlier records show that San Juan was already a town when La Union was created as a province and it is one of the 12 original municipalities that comprised the province.

The municipality is bounded on the north by the municipality of Bacnotan, with the Baroro River and its tributary creek passing through barangays Quidem and Legleg as natural boundary line; on the east by the municipalities of San Gabriel and Bagulin, with the Dasay-Duplas-Nagyubuyuban Creek as natural boundary line; on the south by the City of San Fernando; and on the west by the South China Sea.

San Juan is accessible by land transport with buses plying the Manila-Ilocos Norte and Cagayan route passing through the municipality.
