REGION I STRENGTHENS SUPPORT FOR CHILD DEVELOPMENT AND PROTECTION

Government efforts to support child development and protection have strengthened in Region I. This is evidenced by the growth in the number of day care centers (DCCs) which provide social welfare services such as 1) basic health and nutrition; 2) basic education, recreational and cultural activities; and 3) social security and safe environment.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) data showed a growth of 6.95% or an additional 172 DCCs, from 2,476 in 1997 to 2,648 in 1998. Correspondingly, there is also an increase in the number of children served, posted at 9.12% or an additional of 6,284 children, from 68,892 of 1997. In terms of ratio on the number of DCCs over the number of children served, 1997 and 1998 have similar ratio of 1:28.

By province, Pangasinan registered the most number of DCCs at 891 in 1998 serving 25,551 children. Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte had 699 and 427 DCCs, which served a total of 19,260 and 9,990 children respectively. La Union had the least number of DCCs (390) serving 11,214 children.
