REPORTED RAPE INCIDENTS IN REGION I INCREASED IN 1999

Rape incidents reported to the Philippine National Police in Region I increased by about 24.8 percent in 1999 as compared to the previous year. The number of reported cases increased by 33 in 1999 from 133 in 1998. This was accounted to the increasing trend similarly observed among the provinces. Ilocos Sur registered the highest increase of 57.1 percent while La Union had the lowest at 14.3 percent. Meanwhile, Ilocos Norte and Pangasinan posted a 25.0 and 22.8 percent increase of reported rape cases, respectively.

Among the total reported crime incidents against persons in the region, rape posted the smallest share. Out of the 1,343 reported crime cases, only 12.4 percent was accounted to rape. Majority of the crime incidents committed against individuals was due to physical injuries, registering 679 incidents in 1999.
