Three New Ports Constructed in Region I in 1997

As of December 1997, Region I had 43 ports, three of which were constructed in 1997. Eighteen of these were fishing ports, six were feeder ports, eight were private commercial ports and the rest were public commercial ports. Of the 43 existing ports, 38 were considered operational. Region I was the third region with the least number of ports after Regions 2 and 12 (with 33 and 38 ports, respectively). Region 4 had the most number with 258 ports. All in all, there were 1,494 ports in the Philippines in 1997.

The three new ports in Region I were all feeder ports. Two of these were located in Ilocos Sur (San Esteban and Candon). The other one was located in Sual, Pangasinan.
