ILOCOS REGION's POPULATION TO REACH 4.1M IN 2000

The population in the Ilocos Region will reach 4,146,687 by the end of year 2000 as projected by the Technical Working Group (TWG) on Population Projections of the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB). The regional population will represent 5.4 percent of the projected population of the country (76,348,114) during the year.

Males will slightly outnumber females with a sex ratio (number of males for every 100 females) of 101.3. With the projected 34.4 percent population in the 0-14 age group, the region's population can be considered relatively young. Majority (60.1 percent) of the population however, is estimated to comprise the potential workers (15-64 years old). The region will get more densely populated at 323 persons per square kilometer compared to 296.3 in 1995.

The region's population is expected to rise to almost 500,000 by the end of 2005. An average annual growth rate of 1.60 percent is foreseen for the next five-year period.

Meanwhile, the crude birth rate (CBR) is projected to decline from 25.84 live births per 1,000 population in 1995-2000 to 17.10 in 2015-2020 and also crude death rate (CDR) from 6.66 deaths per 1,000 population to 5.98 during the same period.
