NUMBER OF REPORTED CRIMES IN REGION I INCREASED BY 3.7% IN 1998 The number of crimes that were reported increased by 3.7% in 1998. From 1997's 3,054 reported cases, police handled some 3,167 criminal cases in 1998. 52.48% of these cases were index crimes, which include crimes committed against persons and property. Although a decrease was observed, physical injury remained the most prevalent case in 1998 (713 cases in 1998, 40 cases down from 1997's). The number of index crimes reported decreased by 0.54% in 1998. The increase was observed in non-index crimes (8.8% increase) -- 1,505 cases in 1998 against 1,383 in 1997. The police also became more efficient in 1998 as the crime solution efficiency increased to 88.38% as compared to the previous year's 87.5%.
