TYPHOON DAMAGES IN REGION I AMOUNTED TO 3.9B IN 1998

Four major typhoons visited the region last year which caused damages to infrastructure and agriculture amounting to almost 4 billion pesos.

Typhoons Emang and Gading caused majority of the damages as they destroyed 322 million pesos worth of infrastructure and 2.92 billion pesos worth of agricultural commodities. The infrastructures damaged/destroyed included roads and bridges (218.25 million pesos) and flood/river controls (13.68 million pesos). On the other hand, damaged in the agricultural sector were agricultural crops (2.295 billion pesos), fisheries (614.673 million pesos), and livestocks (6.26 million pesos). The two typhoons visited the region in September last year.

The other two typhoons, Iliang and Loleng, came October last year. Iliang destroyed some 383 million pesos worth of crops and 253 million pesos worth of infrastructures (mostly roads and bridges which were already damaged by Emang and Gading.) Typhoon Loleng, the least intense of the four, did not cause any damages to infrastructure. However, it was responsible for the 64-million-peso   damages to agricultural crops.
