Region I joins other regions in the country in the celebration of the 10th National Statistics Month (NSM). This celebration will formally start on October 1, 1999 with a motorcade around the City Proper of San Fernando followed by the Regional Opening Ceremonies which will held at the Barangay Hall of the City of San Fernando, La Union. Dr. Saturnino Ocampo, Jr., the new President of the Mariano Marcos State University, will be the guest speaker during the Opening Ceremonies.

The NSM is a yearly celebration by virtue of Proclamation No. 647 issued by then President Corazon C. Aquino declaring the month of October of every year as National Statistics Month. The theme for this year's celebration is " Statistical Research, Training and Education - Charting the Course for the New Millennium".

The 10^th NSM month shall be highlighted by the following contests for secondary and tertiary students in the region: essay writing contest, slogan/poster making contest, statistical quiz and oratorical contest. The champions in the provincial elimination will compete at the regional level. The regional competition for the said contests shall be sponsored by different Regional Statistical Coordination Committee (RSCC) agency members and the schedules are as follows:

Various offices in the region will also be sponsoring other activities such as exhibits and lectures to celebrate the NSM. Also, a statistical tour at the different statistical agencies in Metro Manila is being arranged for interested regional agencies.
