TOBACCO PRODUCTION IN REGION I DECREASED IN 1999

Region I, the country’s top producer of tobacco, registered a 5.6 percent decrease in tobacco production compared to the previous year (45,302 MT. in 1998 vs. 42,773 MT in 1999). The decrease was influenced by the 25.3 percent and 5.7 percent decline posted in Ilocos Sur and La Union, respectively, mainly due to heavy rainfall experienced during the 1st Quarter of 1999. The slight 5.4 percent and 6.0 percent production increment registered in Ilocos Norte and Pangasinan, respectively, dampened the effects of the decrease.

Ilocos Sur posted the highest production at 16,625 MT (38.9%), followed by La Union (28.4%). Ilocos Norte had the lowest production share at 7.7 percent.
