| StatNews Posted 17 November 2000 CRIMES AGAINST WOMEN DECREASED IN Q3 2000 Cases handled by the Philippine National Police (PNP) Women's Desk in Region I showed a decrease of 16.9 percent on crimes committed against women for the 3rd quarter of 2000 (54 cases) as compared to the same period in 1999 (65 cases). The considerable decline on the number of cases involving acts of lasciviousness (60.0 percent) and physical injuries (53.8 percent) contributed to the lessened number of cases handled. Though the death penalty has been restored in 1998, rape consistently remained the highest number of cases, accounting for 22.2 and 23.1 percent of the total cases for the third quarters of 2000 and 1999, respectively. Likewise, acts of lasciviousness ranked second highest in percentage share (11.1 percent in Q3 2000 and 23.1 percent in Q3 1999). These would indicate women's vulnerability to crimes of passion. Other cases against women for Q3 2000 were physical injuries (11.1 percent), attempted rape (11.1 percent), concubinage (9.3 percent), battered wife (7.4 percent), frustrated murder (5.6 percent), slander of deeds (5.6 percent), grave oral defamation (3.7 percent), attempted parricide (3.7 percent) and others (9.3 percent).
