BETTER NUTRITIONAL STATUS IN REGION I FOR 1999

The results of the 1999 Operation Timbang (OPT) showed an improvement in the weight status of Pre-School Children (PSC). The percentage of children with normal weights increased from 58.3 percent in 1998 to 60.5 percent in 1999. Except for severely underweight and overweight children, a decline was observed for moderately and mildly underweight PSCs during this period. The moderately underweight decreased from 6.3 percent in 1998 to 5.9 percent in 1999 while the mildly underweight was reduced by 1.8 percentage points in 1999 from 29.6 percent in 1998. On the other hand, a slight increase of 0.01 and 0.07 percentage points were posted for the severely underweight and overweight cases, respectively.

Among the four provinces of the Ilocos Region, Pangasinan had the highest percentage of combined moderately and severely underweight cases among PSCs with 7.1 percent. Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte and La Union followed with 5.9 percent, 5.8 percent and 5.7 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, Urdaneta City had the highest percentage (8.1 percent) of combined moderately and severely underweight PSCs among the cities in the region, followed by San Carlos City (7.7 percent) and Laoag City (7.6 percent).
