20th NSM FOCUSES ON SECURITY SECTOR STATISTICS

The celebration of the 20th National Statistics Month (NSM) this October focuses on the security sector with the theme “Pagpapahusay ng Estadistika sa Sektor ng Panseguridad para sa Mabuting Pamamahala, Kapayapaan at Maipagpapatuloy na Pagpapaundlad” or “Enhancing Security Sector Statistics for Good Governance, Peace and Sustainable Development”.

The National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) issued Memorandum Circular No. 01-09 in July 2009, enjoining all agencies of the government, academic institutions and the private sector at the national and subnational levels to actively participate in and support the month-long celebration.  Meanwhile, the Regional Development Council (RDC) I, issued Resolution No. 46-09 in August 2009 enjoining all local government units, regional line agencies, state universities and colleges, private sector and the League of Local Planners and Development Coordinators (LLPDC) to actively participate and support the celebration of the 20th NSM in the Ilocos Region.

The celebration in the Ilocos Region will formally start on October 1, 2009 with a regional opening ceremony at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) in San Fernando City, La Union from 1:00-5:00 PM.  The program will be jointly sponsored by the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Regional Office (RO) 1, Philippine Air Force 580 ACWG, and Naval Forces North (NFN). Capt. Nodolfo Tejada of the NFN will serve as the opening ceremony’s guest speaker. The OCD Regional Office 1 will also make a presentation on disaster statistics.

Several activities have been lined-up by the various offices and academic institutions in the region to celebrate the event such as hanging of streamers, motorcade, exhibits, statistical fora, statistics quizzes and other contests for students. The RSCC, the over-all coordinator of the celebration in the region, will also select the Best NSM Province, Best NSM Activity, and Best NSM Jingle.

The NSM is celebrated annually for the purpose of promoting, enhancing and instilling nationwide awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics and at the same time ensuring the support of the public in improving and enhancing the quality and standards of statistics in the country.
