PRESS RELEASE

May 23, 2008

NSCB Releases the 2008 Women and Men in the

Ilocos Region Statistical Handbook

The National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) Regional Division (RD) I announces the release of the fourth edition of the Women and Men (WAM) in the Ilocos Region Statistical Handbook. The WAM is NSCB’s contribution to the government’s efforts in promoting the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and in fulfilling the various international gender-related commitments of the country, such as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The MDG Goal 3 calls for the promotion of gender equality and women empowerment, which are also the visions of the Philippines Plan for Gender-Responsive Development.   The advocacy on the CEDAW and the monitoring of the region’s status in addressing MDG Goal 3 imply  the need for quality gender-based data for the analysis and informed decisions on different gender issues.

The WAM contains the latest available statistics, highlighting the differences between women and men in the Ilocos Region and its provinces/cities on various areas of concern, namely: 1) Population and Families; 2) Work; 3) Economic Participation; 4) Agriculture; 5) Education; 6) Health and Nutrition; 7) Social Welfare; 8) Public Life; 9) Migration; 10) Peace and Human Rights; 11) Violence Against Women and Children; and 12) Environment. The gender statistics are presented in tables and charts with brief analyses.   The data were gathered from the results of surveys and censuses, and reports from administrative records generated by the different line departments and agencies that make up the Philippine Statistical System.

The handbook is a significant source of information for decision-makers, project planners, implementers and evaluators in their advocacy activities and in the formulation of effective plans and programs for the advancement of women in the region.

The publication is now available at the National Statistical Information Center (NSIC) library, which is open to the public for free from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Mondays to Fridays.  The NSIC is a one-stop shop of statistical information and services managed by the NSCB.  The NSIC Region 1 Branch is located at 2/F L.M. Chan Bldg., 663 Quezon Avenue, San Fernando City, La Union.  Personal copies of the publication can be availed at the NSIC Bookshoppe at a very minimal price.  Subscription can be done through the internet (www.nscb.gov.ph/ru1) or at the bookshoppe.
