La Union and
DepEd-Pangasinan II Garner 2007 Best NSM Awards
The Province of La Union won the
2007 Best National Statistics Month (NSM) Province while the “Symposium on
Civil Registration” of the Department of Education (DepEd)-Division of
Pangasinan II was adjudged as the Best NSM Activity in this year’s Search for
the Best NSM Province and Activity conducted by the Regional Statistical
Coordination Committee (RSCC) Region 1 for the 18th NSM celebration.
La
Union bested the Province of Ilocos Norte based on the following criteria:
diversity of activities (35%), extent of participation of cooperating agencies
and local government units (30%), conveys favorable image of the province
(15%), and economy and ingenious use of resources (20%). The province conducted various activities,
such as statistical fora (opening and closing ceremonies, MDG symposium and
planning/workshop on hunger mitigation), statistical contests (provincial level
statquiz, oratorical, essay-writing and poster/slogan-making contests), radio
plugs and IEC activities (streamer hanging), during the whole month of October,
with the Provincial Statistical Coordination Committee spearheading these
activities. The Provincial Government, local government units (LGUs) and
provincial offices/line agencies embarked on a cost-sharing scheme to provide
financial support for the conduct of the activities. Further, the province was
able to tie-up their activities with major similar activities of some Regional
Line Agencies (RLAs). The province was
awarded a Plaque of Recognition and P 3,000 cash for winning the contest.
Meanwhile, the “Symposium on Civil Registration” of
DepEd-Pangasinan II stood out among the seven entries for this year’s Best NSM
Activity based on the following criteria: relevance (25%), overall presentation
of the activity (40%), impact (25%) and economy of resources (10%). The
symposium was held at the Juan G. Macaraeg National High School in Binalonan,
Pangasinan with the National Statistics Office (NSO) Provincial Statistics
Officer as the guest speaker. The
symposium focused on basic information about civil registration, specifically
for births, which are essential in ensuring correct information on birth
records. The activity aims to contribute to the generation of quality birth
statistics. The symposium was attended by 198 students, teachers, school
administrators, parents, and Federated PTCA (spell out) Presidents. The DepEd Division shouldered the snacks for
the speaker and management and token for the guest speaker. DepEd-Pangasinan II received a Plaque of Recognition and P 1,500 cash for winning
the contest.
The winners were announced during
the 4th RSCC regular meeting on December 19, 2007 at the Gov. Justo
Orros, Jr. Conference Room of the National Economic Development Authority
(NEDA) Regional Office I in San Fernando City, La Union. The prizes of the winners were also awarded
during the meeting. The NSM Technical Working Group, composed of representatives
from the regional offices of the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS),
National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB), NEDA, and NSO evaluated the entries for both categories and recommended
the winners. The winners were approved
by the RSCC through a referendum last December 18, 2007.
The
Search for the Best NSM Province and Activity, now on its fourth year, was
initiated by the RSCC to: 1) recognize outstanding participation in the NSM
celebration; 2) serve as incentive to participating individuals and agencies in
the observance of the NSM; 3) encourage wider participation to the NSM
celebration; and 4) promote the conduct of activities that will further the
objectives and spirit of the NSM celebration.
The
Search for the Best NSM Province is open to all the four provinces of Region 1
while the Search for the Best NSM Activity is open to all line agencies,
academic institutions and private entities.
