18th National Statistics Month (NSM) Celebration Highlights the MDGs

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) will be highlighted in the 18th National Statistics Month (NSM) celebration this October with the theme  “Statistics and Action: A Road to a Better Life Through the MDGs. ”  This year’s NSM theme underscores the very crucial and significant role of statistics as a basis for monitoring the progress achieved on sustained actions since 1990, at present and up to 2015 and beyond on the MDGs.

In Region I, the NSM celebration kicks off through a Joint Regional and La Union Provincial Opening Ceremony on September 28, 2007, 8:30 AM, at the Diego Silang Hall, La Union Provincial Capitol, City of San Fernando, La Union.  The opening ceremony will be highlighted with the discussion on this year’s NSM theme by Director Cleofe S. Pastrana of the Social Development Staff (SDS) of the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA), the guest of speaker of the opening ceremony.  In addition, the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB), the official repository of MDG indicators and host of this year’s NSM celebration, will present the MDG Situationer of Region I during the Statistical Symposium, as part of the opening program.

Around 100 participants from the different regional and provincial line agencies, local government units, academe and non-government organizations are expected to attend the Opening Ceremony.   Info kits containing informative materials from different offices will be provided to the participants.  The Provincial Government of La Union and the NSCB will jointly sponsor the event.

The region decided to conduct the opening ceremony before October so that the various offices could attend the 10th National Convention on Statistics (NCS), which will be held on October 1-2 at the Edsa Shangri-la Hotel in Mandaluyong City.  The NCS, conducted every three years, provides a forum for exchanging ideas and experiences in the field of statistics and discussing prevailing statistical developments, issues and challenges in the country’s statistical system. Papers covering a wide array of topics, such as poverty, gender, tourism, market research, and economic statistics, will be presented during the convention.

In support to  the NSM celebration, the government sector,  academe, and  non-government organizations in the region have lined-up various statistical activities such as fora, exhibits, radio plugs, contests and information dissemination activities, for the whole month of October.  At the regional level, the NSCB, Philippine Information Agency and the National Statistics Office will hold a radio interview during the “Ammuentayo Radio Program” on October 18.  The Philippine Statistical Association Region I Chapter will also conduct the Regional Statistical Quiz on the 3rd week of October, which will be participated by the provincial winners of the Provincial Statistics Quiz.  The regional celebration will culminate tentatively on October 29 through the Joint Regional and La Union Provincial Closing Ceremony.

Meanwhile, the provincial/city/municipal/division offices and the academe will also conduct their respective NSM activities. The complete calendar of activities for this year’s celebration could be accessed at www.nscb.gov.ph/ru1.

To encourage wider participation to the NSM celebration and promote the conduct of activities that will further the objectives and spirit of the NSM celebration, the Regional Statistical Coordination Committee (RSCC) will be selecting the 2007 Best NSM Province and Best NSM Activity. For this year, the NSM Technical Working Group, composed of representatives from NEDA, NSCB, National Statistics Office (NSO), Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS), and Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), will conduct actual visits in the four provinces as part of the new evaluation procedures for these contests.

The NSM is conducted annually by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 647 declaring the month of October of every year as the NSM. .  The observance of the event aims to promote, enhance and instill nationwide awareness and appreciation on the importance and value of statistics and at the same time ensure the support of the public in improving and enhancing the quality and standards of statistics in the country.  The RSCC I coordinates the NSM celebration in the region, with the NSCB Regional Division I providing secretariat services.
