RSCC Clears Baseline Study on Tilapia Farming in Region I

The Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU) Southern La Union Campus (SLUC) Institute of Fisheries will conduct the "Baseline Study of Tilapia Farming in Region I" from May to December 2003 to establish benchmark information on tilapia farming in the region. The study aims to collect data on the tilapia industry for use in the (1) further improvement of the cultural and marketing practices of the tilapia growers and (2) planning and policy-formulation activities of government executives to enhance the production of tilapia, promote the development of the industry and protect the welfare of tilapia operators. The following outputs are expected to be generated from the study: (1) personal profile, socio-economic profile, farm profile and cultural and marketing practices of tilapia growers in Region I, and ( 2) problems confronting the farming of tilapia.

The study will cover the tilapia producers in the four provinces of the region using the second semester of 2001 to the first semester of 2002 as reference period. Large scale producers will be completely enumerated while small-time or household family producers will be randomly selected. Graduates of BS in Fisheries of the said institution will conduct the personal interviews from May 27 to July 31, 2003. The final results of the study will be released on December 15, 2003. DMMMSU has allocated P 80,000.00 for the conduct of the survey.

The survey was granted clearance by the Regional Statistical Coordination Committee (RSCC) last May 5, 2003, thru the Technical Subcommittee on Survey Design (TSSD) in line with the Statistical Survey Review and Clearance System (SSRCS).  This is a mechanism instituted by the NSCB through Memorandum Circular No. 4-88 to: (1) ensure sound design for data collection, (2) minimize the burden placed upon respondents, (3) effect economy   in   statistical   data   collection,   (4)   achieve   better coordination of government statistical activities, and (5) inform the private sector and the public in general that a government survey operation has passed clearance and enjoin their cooperation in the conduct of the survey. The RSCC, the highest policy-making body on statistical matters in the region, is implementing the SSRCS in the region.
