Region I Celebrates 12th National Statistics Month

The month-long celebration of the 12th National Statistics Month (NSM) formally kicks off on October 2, 2001 with a motorcade around the San Fernando City proper to be participated by various line agencies in the region. This will be followed by the opening ceremony to be held at People’s Hall, City Hall, San Fernando City where Undersecretary Hermenegildo Dumlao, Executive Director of the North Luzon Growth Commission, will be the guest speaker.

This year’s celebration will be highlighted by various activities from the line agencies in the region. Fora, symposia, conferences and contests for secondary and tertiary level students will be conducted to emphasize the importance of statistics. The Philippine Statistical Association (PSA) Region I Chapter and the Statistical Research and Training Center (SRTC), in coordination with the Regional Statistical Coordination Committee (RSCC), for one, will be conducting a Training on Forecasting Techniques for Local Government Units (LGUs) on October 9-11, 2001 at the ORT Center, San Fernando City, La Union. The organization will also conduct the 2nd Regional Statistical Convention on October 17, 2001 at the NEDA Regional Office I, San Fernando City, La Union.

The NSM celebration will be capped by the closing ceremony to be held on October 30, 2001 where winners in the various secondary and tertiary level contests will be awarded.

The NSM is being conducted by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 647 declaring the month of October of every year as National Statistics Month. The annual celebration aims to accord the needed recognition of the importance of statistics as well as in insuring the participation and cooperation of the general public in improving and enhancing the quality and standard of statistics in the country. This year’s celebration has the theme "The Role of Statistics in a Knowledge-Based Economy."
