| The Region
I office of the Department of Tourism (DOT) accredited 46 tourist accommodation
establishments from the 96 identified in the region in 1998. The accredited establishments
had a combined number of 1,355 rooms available for occupancy. Twenty-one of the 46 accredited establishments were
resorts. Sixteen hotels, seven inns/apartels, one homestay, and one pension house were
also accredited last year. In terms of number of rooms, however, most were hotel rooms,
715, followed by resort rooms, 491; inn/apartel rooms, 125; pension house rooms, 21; and
homestay rooms, 3.
Based on the DOT establishment
classification guideline, one hotel in the region was classified as Deluxe Class, another
as First Class, eight as Standard Class, and six as Economy Class. Meanwhile, the 21
resorts had the following classification: Class "AAA" (one); Class
"AA" (seven); and Class "A" resort (12). The guideline contains the
minimum requirements for each classification in terms of available facilities and
services.
La Union and Pangasinan each had 15
operating tourist accommodation establishments in 1998, while Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur
had eight establishments each. |

DEFINITION
OF TERMS
Hotel - a building, edifice, or premises or a completely independent part
thereof, which is used for the regular reception, accommodation or lodging of travelers
and tourists and the provision of services incidental thereto for a fee.
Resort - any place with pleasant environment and atmosphere conducive to
comfort, healthful relaxation and rest, offering food, sleeping accommodation and
recreational facilities to the public for a fee or remuneration
Tourist Inn - a lodging establishment catering to transients which does not
meet the minimum requirements of an economy hotel
Apartel - any building or edifice containing several independent and
furnished or semi-furnished apartments, regularly leased to travelers for dwelling on a
more or less long term basis and offering basic services to its tenants, similar to hotels
Pension House - a private or family-operated tourist boarding house, tourist
guest house or tourist lodging house employing non-professional domestic helpers regularly
catering to tourists and travelers, containing several independent lettable rooms,
providing common facilities such as toilets, bathrooms/showers, living and dining rooms
and/or kitchen and where a combination of board and lodging may be provided
Homestay - alternative accommodation establishments in areas where there are
no available hotels or other tourist establishments
