In 1998, a total of
3,204 socially disadvantaged families were served by the Department of Social Welfare and
Development (DSWD) in Region I. On a daily basis, this translates to about 9 families
served during the period under review. Meanwhile, the region accounted for about 1.1
percent of the total number of families served by the department nationwide which was
recorded at 284,333.
Both at the national and regional level, the number of women served by DSWD was the
highest among individual clients. Other clients were children (1,978), youths (219),
senior citizens (1,638) and persons with disability (1,126). Services extended by DSWD-I
were placement and protective services, psychological recovery and social reintegration
services, counseling, educational assistance, medical assistance, skills training,
livelihood assistance, job placement, referrals, Unlad Kabataan Program, financial
assistance, legal services, productivity skills training, socio-cultural services
spiritual services, homelife and health services.Institutional
clients included LGUs, NGOs and POs. In 1998, the DSWD-1 served more LGUs (312) than NGOs
(26) and POs (2). Specifically, the total number of LGUs assisted was 156 times more than
the number of POs and 12 times more than that of NGOs.
Similarly, on a nationwide basis, the number of LGUs
(6,765) served outnumbered the NGOs (685) by 887.6 percent and POs (6,189) by 9.3 percent. |
