… cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the Ilocos Region?

  Cancer has consistently been one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity in the Ilocos Region. While it showed a declining trend from 1995-1997, the number of deaths caused by cancer increased by 41.7 percent in 1998 (1,696). Cancer has been claiming lives at an average of 34 persons annually in every 100,000 population.

Meanwhile, an annual average of 2,712 persons from 1994-1998 were confined due to cancer,

Mortality and Morbidity Cases

with the highest number of cases recorded in 1995 at 6,074. With a rate of almost 160 cases per 100,000 population in 1995, cancer was the third leading cause of morbidity in the said year next to acute respiratory infection (1,549) and diarrhea (1,095). While it decreased significantly from 1995 to 1996 (67.0 percent), morbidity due to cancer showed an increasing trend from 1996-1998, reaching 2,589 in 1998.
