DID YOU KNOW THAT . . .

… during the first half of 1999, there was one hospital bed for every 1,088 persons in Region I?

The May 1999 records of the Department of Health Regional Office I showed that 118 hospitals in the region, with a combined bed capacity of 3,747, were licensed to service its 4,075,569 population. This translates to 1,088 persons per hospital bed in the region.

Out of the 118 hospitals, 37 (or 31.4 percent) were government hospitals. Almost half of them were located in Pangasinan, where 54 licensed hospitals could be found. These 54 hospitals have a combined bed capacity of 1,795. La Union and Ilocos Norte had the least number of hospitals, with 16 (680 beds) and 17 (567 beds) hospitals, respectively. Meanwhile, Ilocos Sur had 705 hospital beds distributed among its 31 hospitals.

Although Pangasinan had the most number of hospitals, it had a bed-to-population ratio of 1:1,309. On the other hand, the approximated bed-to-population ratio in the provinces of La Union, Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur were 1:945, 1:899, and 1:814, respectively. Among the provinces, therefore, Ilocos Sur can accommodate its population in terms of hospital bed capacity more than the other provinces.

Most (55.9 percent) of the hospitals in the region were categorized as primary hospitals. These primary hospitals had a combined capacity of 858 beds. Secondary hospitals comprised 32.2 percent of the total hospitals (1,218 beds), while Tertiary hospitals composed the remaining 11.9 percent (1,671 beds).

Private hospitals outnumbered government hospitals, especially those classified under Primary and Secondary categories. Under the Tertiary category, the number of government and private hospitals was equal. There were 14 government hospitals to 24 privately owned Secondary hospitals, and 16 government to 50 private Primary hospitals.
