The total amount
of loans granted by government banks in the Ilocos Region increased by 9.3 percent in 1998
compared to the previous year. The Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP), Land Bank of
the Philippines (LBP), and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) loaned out a total of
P2.0 billion.
LBP lent the biggest amount at P1.4 billion or 69.3 percent of the total amount of loans
granted in the region. This represents a 13.4 percent increase from the amount lent by the
said bank in 1997. BSP followed with P358.0 million (17.6 percent) while DBP loaned out
P267.7 million (13.1 percent).Most of the loans granted by the banks were for
agriculture/agrarian reform accounting for 45.5 percent (P929.4 million) of the total
loans granted. Industrial/commercial loans followed at 44.3 percent or P903.1 million.
Loans which accounted for less than ten percent of the total loans granted were social
loans (8.3 percent), emergency loans (1.0 percent) and LGU loans (0.6 percent). Other
loans which included loans on real estate (acquisition of house and lot) and public
utilities had the least percentage share with only 0.3 percent or P6.4M.
Loans availed by LGUs which were mostly on salary loans had the highest increase at
296.6 percent from only P3.2 million in 1997 to P12.8 million in 1998. This was followed
by agriculture/agrarian reform with a 9.8 percent increase from P846.1 million in 1997 to
P929.4 million in 1998. Meanwhile, social loans decreased by 4.9 percent to P168.4
million.
The type of loans granted by the banks varied according to the needs of their clients.
Majority (84.8 percent or P303.7 million) of the loans availed at BSP were agricultural
loans while those availed at DBP and LBP were social (69.2 percent or P168.4 million) and
commercial loans (59.4 percent or P840.6 million), respectively. |
