Ilocos Region Wraps Up 22nd National Statistics Month Celebration
The 22nd National Statistics Month (NSM) celebration in Region I formally ended on October 28, 2011 with the conduct of the Regional Closing Ceremony at Hotel Ariana, Bauang, La Union. The culminating program highlighted a forum on the sharing of the data from the National Household Targeting System for Poverty Reduction (NHTS-PR) of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the awarding of the winners of the NSM regional contests.
The Regional Closing Ceremony was attended by 161 participants from the regional and provincial line agencies, local government units, academe and media with DSWD as sponsor. Mr. Melecio Ubilas presented the NHTS-PR overview, data sharing and utilization procedures while Ms. Anniely Ferrer presented the existing data from the system. The regional champions of the jingle making contest and oratorical contest also performed live their winning pieces during the program. Before the announcement of winners and awarding of prizes, the highlights of this year’s NSM celebration was also presented through an audio-visual presentation.
The Province of La Union was chosen as the 2011 Best NSM Province based on the following criteria: diversity of activities (35%), extent of participation of cooperating agencies and local government units (30%), conveys favorable image of the province (20%) and economy and ingenious use of resources (15%). The province, led by Dr. Mauro Libatique, Jr. of the Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO), received the Plaque of Recognition and cash prize of Php 5,000 awarded by National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) Assistant Director Nestor G. Rillon, representing the Regional Statistical Coordination Committee (RSCC). On the other hand, the Province of Pangasinan was elevated to the Best NSM Province Hall of Fame for being the Best NSM Province in 2008, 2009 and 2010 and for sustaining its NSM activities in 2011. The province, led by Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr., received a trophy and Plaque of Recognition for its award. The Search for Best NSM Province was introduced in the region by the RSCC as a form of rewards and incentives system to NSM implementers in the region.
The winners for the other regional contests which were conducted to promote awareness and appreciation of statistics among students were also awarded. The winners for the poster-slogan making contest which was conducted by NEDA were Kristelle Shane F. Calica (La Union), secondary level, and Nikki J. Valenzuela (Pangasinan), tertiary level and each received Php 2,000 and Certificate of Recognition. The winners for the Search for Best NSM Jingle which was coordinated by the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics were Teodoro Hernaez National High School (Ilocos Sur), secondary level, and Panpacific University North Philippines (Pangasinan), tertiary level and each received Php 2,500 and Certificate of Recognition. For the oratorical contest which was conducted by the National Statistics Office, the winners were Sheena P. Ferido (Ilocos Sur), secondary level, and Precious Camille P. Bucad (Ilocos Norte), tertiary level and each brought home Php 1,000 and Certificate of Recognition. The cash prizes were donated by the Regional Development Council. On the other hand, the champions for the statistical quiz conducted by the Philippine Statistical Association, Ilocos Chapter were Ilocos Norte National High School, secondary level and Mariano Marcos State University, tertiary level and each received trophy, Php 2,500 and Certificate of Recognition.
The RSCC, the over-all coordinator of the NSM celebration in the region, extends its deepest gratitude to all the sponsors and the participating entities who contributed to the success of this year’s NSM celebration.
