Definition of Terms: 1) The ratio of area protected to maintain biological diversity to surface area is defined as nationally protected area as percentage of total surface area of a country. The generally accepted IUCN-World Conservation Union definition of a protected area is an area of land or sea dedicated to the protection of biological diversity and of natural and associated cultural resources and managed through legal or effective means. 2) Protected Area refers to identified portions of land and water set aside by reason of their unique physical and biological significance, managed to enhance biological diversity and protected against destructive human exploitation.

Remarks (Data Limitations):
Increase/decrease by year of ratio of area protected to maintain biological diversity to surface area depends on the year the protected area was declared as Natural Monument, Protected landscape and Seascape

Note:
DENR RO 1 informed that the CO data for 2003 shall be the same data for 2004-2005 since there were no new areas protected.
