| Preparations
are now underway in the various offices in the Ilocos Region
for the celebration
of the 19th National Statistics Month (NSM) this October. This is
in response to National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB)
Memorandum Circular No. 001-08 dated June 23, 2008 enjoining
the departments, bureaus, offices, and instrumentalities of the
national government, government-owned and -controlled corporations,
state universities and colleges, local government units, and
the private sector at the national and subnational levels to
actively participate in and support the celebration of the 19th
NSM in October 2008. The overall theme of this year’s celebration
is “Demand-Driven Statistics: Key to Micro, Small and Medium
Enterprise (MSME) Development.” |

annual celebration of the NSM is pursuant to Presidential Proclamation
No. 647, “Declaring
the Month of October of Every Year as the NSM,” issued on
September 20, 1990. |

|
|
|
| Ilocos
Region’s economy
tapered off as it posted a decelerated growth of 5.8 percent in 2007,
from 6.1 percent in 2006, largely due to the slower growth in AFF. |
|
|
| AFF, contributing 42.8
percent of the region’s output, grew by 4.5 percent in 2007, from 7.3 percent
the previous year. The deceleration was traced to the sluggish growth
in the production of the region’s major crops caused by the
prolonged dry season in Northern Luzon. |
|
|
| Services, also with a 42.8 percent contribution
to the regional economy, expanded to 5.4 percent from the 4.8 percent
growth in 2006. All sub-sectors contributed to the growth with finance,
TCS, trade and private services recording faster growths of 10.2
percent, 6.7 percent, 6.1 percent and 5.2 percent, respectively. |

| Industry, contributing
14.4 percent of the region’s output, expanded by 11.7 percent
from 6.9 percent growth in 2006, with all subsectors posting improved
growths. |
