The El Niņo and La Niņa years and intensities are based on the Oceanic Niņo Index, which become the de-facto standard for identifying El Niņo (warm) and La Niņa (cool) events in the tropical Pacific.  It is also referred to as the El Niņo Southern Oscillation (ENSO).
