Municipal Profile: San Juan: Surfing Capital of the Northern Philippines

The Municipality of San Juan in La Union used to be famous for its pottery industry. But its inviting blue sea, rolling waves and vibrant sea life redefined this tiny town located in the province's 1st district to become known as the surfing Capital of the Northern Philippines.
A favorite venue for international and local surfing competitions, the surfing season in San Juan has two parts. From November to February, the waves are bigger and far more consistent.
San Juan is a 3rd class municipality and has a total land area of 5,186 hectares. It is located at the western portion of the Province of La Union. It is about eight kilometers north of San Fernando City, the province's capital. It accessible by land transport with buses plying the Manila-Ilocos Norte and Cagayan route passing through the municipality.

Ilocos Region prepares for 19th National Statistics Month

Preparations are now underway in the various offices in the Ilocos Region for the celebration of the 19th National Statistics Month (NSM) this October. This is in response to National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) Memorandum Circular No. 001-08 dated June 23, 2008 enjoining the departments, bureaus, offices, and instrumentalities of the national government, government-owned and -controlled corporations, state universities and colleges, local government units, and the private sector at the national and subnational levels to actively participate in and support the celebration of the 19th NSM in October 2008. The overall theme of this year’s celebration is “Demand-Driven Statistics: Key to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Development.”
The annual celebration of the NSM is pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 647, “Declaring the Month of October of Every Year as the NSM,” issued on September 20, 1990.
