 Press Release

NSCB to release "sexy", “cool” and “awesome” statistics
(NSCB-PR-201201-NS1-02, Posted 25 January 2012)

NSCB to release "sexy", “cool” and “awesome” statistics
In accordance with its corporate core value to be ever relevant to its stakeholders, the National Statistical Coordination Board Technical Staff (NSCB-TS) will start disseminating indicators through a new section called "Sexy Statistics" on the NSCB website that will feature exciting and interesting statistics.

In 2009, Google Chief Economist Hal Varian said “the sexy job in the next ten years will be statisticians…”. During the consultative workshop on the Philippine Statistical Development Program 2011-2017, former Tourism Secretary Dr. Mina Gabor highlighted the need for statisticians "to make statistics sexier and more exciting for laymen".  Dr. Roberto De Vera of the University of Asia and the Pacific added that when statistics are presented in easy-to-understand terms, they could also be "cool" and "awesome."

As more and more users are requesting for statistics, the NSCB-TS finds it important to share information with other users.  Through this initiative, the NSCB-TS can optimize the use of statistics that they compile, widen access to statistics, and enhance public appreciation for statistics towards good governance, towards informed decision making, and towards better development outcomes.

This new section presents the special tabulations and computations done by the NSCB-TS not only in response to various data requests of  stakeholders but also to present statistics on current issues.  It can be accessed at http://www.nscb.gov.ph/sexystats/ .
