11th NCS to Feature Sessions/Topics for the Business Community

To elicit active participation of multi national companies and private organizations specifically the business community, the 11th National Convention on Statistics (NCS) to be held on October 4-5, 2010 will feature sessions on financial risk management, banking and finance statistics, econometrics and applications, economic progress, data mining/business intelligence, and time series analysis, among others. The said sessions will have relevant statistical discussions that would be useful for the participants
in making informed decisions based on both current conditions and future business opportunities.
Plenary sessions will tackle emerging concerns, specifically disaster risk reduction and climate change, governance and Millennium Development Goals. Invited as plenary session speakers include Governor Joey Salceda of Albay Province and Ms. Ma. Lourdes Mangahas of the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) with Prof. Solita C. Monsod as Session Chair/Discussant. Another plenary topic will deal with social security statistics with Ms. Fe Dayco of the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) as speaker and Ms. Mercedes Suleik as Session Chair/Discussant .
Aside from papers on Civil Registration, Survey Design, Time Series Analysis, Climate Change, Information and Communication Technology, Housing and Urban Poor Statistics, Demographic and Health Statistics, Science and Technology, Education Statistics, Tourism Statistics, Governance, Labor and Employment, Gender, Poverty, there will also be papers on 1) Measurement of Inter-regional Differentials and Dependencies in the Philippine Economy Based on a Multi-Region’s Inter-Regional Input-Output Table, 2) Identifying and Measuring Asset Price Bubbles in the Philippines, 3) Input-Output Multiplier Analysis for Major Industries in the Philippines, 3) Estimating Inflation-at-Risk Using Extreme Value Theory, 4) High Dimensional Nonparametric Discrete Choice Model, 5) The Economic Transition and Growth of Philippine Regions, 6) The Features of the 2000 Rebased-Revised PSNA, 7) A Study on the Impact of Election Spending on the Philippine Economy, and 8) Predicting Poverty Statistics Using Employment Data.
Organized by the Philippine Statistical System (PSS) and spearheaded by the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB), the 11th NCS will be held on October 4-5, 2010 at the EDSA Shangri-La Hotel, Mandaluyong City. The joint opening ceremonies of the 11th NCS/ 21st National Statistics Month (NSM)/1st World Statistics Day (WSD) with the theme, "Towards a Philippine Statistical System Responsive to Emerging National and Global Challenge” will have Socioeconomic Planning Secretary and NEDA Director General Cayetano W. Paderanga,Jr as the keynote speaker.
The Convention will coincide with the conduct of the Statistical Information Management Exhibition or SIMEX 2010 and the 11th Student Faculty Conference co-organized by the UP (Diliman) School of Statistics (UPSS) and UP (Los Baños) Institute of Statistics (InStat) also in the same venue.
