The National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) is now calling for entries to the 2nd National Statistics Month (NSM) Media Awards. This award recognizes the important role of media practitioners specifically reporters from broadcast (TV and radio) and print/online news service from both the government and private media organizations, who have made significant contributions in promoting, popularizing, and using statistics in information dissemination and other relevant purposes.

The award will be based on the following criteria:

• Quality (accuracy and timeliness). The data cited in the article or report should be based on reliable sources and the substance of the article or report should have significance and relevance to the needs of the country and the Filipino people. The report or article can include both qualitative and quantitative analysis using statistics (35%).

• Frequency/number of articles/reports. The frequency/number of articles will be based on the list of articles/reports submitted by the reporter and from the monitoring of news releases by statistical agencies published/aired in newspapers/online/broadcast media. The news articles/reports should have been released during the contest period from November 2009 to July 2010 (35%).

• Effectiveness of the style/approach/form of articles/reports. News articles/reports which make use of statistics should be user friendly and easily understood by the public. The articles/reports should also positively motivate readers in deeply understanding the use and importance of statistics in improving people’s lives through informed decisions (30%).

Applicants can either apply or be nominated by submitting the following requirements on or before August 17, 2010: 1) Bio-data; 2) List of their news articles which make use of statistics published during the period November 2009 to July 2010; 3) three of their best articles as entries; and 4) Endorsement from affiliated organization/company to:

A plaque and cash award shall be given to the 2nd NSM Media Awards winners for TV, Radio and print/online news categories on October 4, 2010 during the 21st NSM Opening ceremonies.  In 2009, the winner of the 1st NSM Media Awards was Mr. Roel L. Landingin of Newsbreak Magazine.
