NSCB Releases the 2008 Philippine Standard Classification
of Education (PSCED)
(PR-200902-PP2-02, Posted 24 February 2009)
The National Statistical Coordination Board has released the 2008 Philippine Standard Classification of Education (PSCED) to conform with the latest international standard classification on education (ISCED) prescribed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The PSCED is a detailed classification of all educational levels in the Philippine educational system. It aims to provide the basic conceptual framework for the collection, compilation and presentation of statistics in the Philippine educational system, promote better understanding and cooperation both within the international and national educational communities, and contribute to the improvement in the generation of quality education statistics.
The UNESCO first issued the ISCED in 1976 and revised it in 1997. Meanwhile, the first standard educational classification in the country released by the NSCB was the 1994 PSCED based on the 1976 ISCED. An updated PSCED was published in October 1997 but still based on the 1976 ISCED.
The 2008 PSCED which is based on the 1997 ISCED now consists of six (6) educational levels instead of the original seven (7) educational levels found in the 1997 PSCED.
The inter-agency Technical Committee on Statistical Standards and Classifications (TCSSC) and its Technical Working Group on Education Classification (TWGEC) reviewed the 2008 PSCED and recommended its adoption in the Philippine Statistical System (PSS) for approval of the NSCB Executive Board.
The 2008 PSCED was approved and prescribed for adoption in the PSS by the NSCB Executive Board through Resolution No. 8, Series of 2008.
