NSCB Releases the 2008 Philippine Statistical Yearbook
(PR-200708-NS1-12, Posted 30 September 2008)

As a commitment to the realization of the government’s national development agenda through continuous generation, production and dissemination of timely, relevant and useful products and services, the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) releases the 2008 Philippine Statistical Yearbook (PSY).

The PSY is one of the major publications of the NSCB which serves as a guide to data users in the formulation of plans, programs and policies in both the government and private sectors as well as a reference to researchers in the academic community. It is also intended to serve the information needs of its clients in the global community.

Every chapter of the PSY starts with a brief introduction which explains the coverage and the data sources. It presents in time-series, historical information about the country’s social and economic environment. It also contains data that are disaggregated in different dimensions and includes a glossary of terms that provides the definition of selected statistical terminologies not widely understood by the general public. The statistics are based on information gathered in censuses and surveys, as well as from administrative data, which, other government agencies have made available for statistical purposes. Generally, the statistics in the PSY have been generated in accordance with principles, standards and classifications that are in line with international recommendations and guidelines adapted to local conditions.

The 2008 Edition of the PSY has data on 19 subject areas to meet the needs of a wide range of data users such as: government agencies/units, non-government organizations, business firms, entrepreneurs, students, international institutions, and the general public.  For this edition, the NSCB updated 336 tables which include the 2007 Census on Population and Housing, 2006 Family Income and Expenditure Survey, and the 2006 Poverty Statistics, among others. This edition also features the Philippine Standard Geographic Code (PSGC) of the 1,495 municipalities, 136 cities and 81 provinces of the country.  The PSGC is a systematic classification and coding of the geographic areas in the country which is intended to serve as a basic tool for ensuring the comparability of statistics across the geographical areas of the country and as a guide in local development planning.

The release of the PSY 2008 edition coincides with the celebration of NSCB’s twenty one years of dedicated public service to the statistical community reaffirming its commitment to do its best in making every edition of the PSY a significant step towards a more effective dissemination of official statistics in the country.
